The foundation stone of this church was laid by Mrs Elizabeth Bury of Little Island House, Little Island on 29th September, 1864.(Michaelmas Day). Mrs Bury had donated the site for the church and graveyard to the Church Representative Body. The church was dedicated by Bishop John Gregg the Bishop of Cork and Ross on 17th May 1866, before a full congregation. The church was designed by Messrs Welland and Gillespie Architects to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, and the building contractor was Mr. Henry Bible.
