Tom Burke was born in Bandon in 1919, the youngest of the family of Edward & Mary Burke. (see graves 149 and 150) He was educated at Warner's Lane National School, which is now the site for Silversprings Housing Estate and using the new name of Casement Road.

The Burke family moved to Cork in 1928, where Tom continued his education at the Presentation Brothers College Cork. He entered UCC at a young age and his progress in academic studies was rapid, attaining a BA in Irish and German in 1937. During his studies he travelled to Bonn University in Germany and qualified in medicine in 1942.

Between 1942 and 1952 he worked in Sheffield, Newcastle and Chichester where he gained much experience. Tom was awarded his MCH in 1948 and FRCS Eng. in 1951. He was appointed to the South Infirmary as a consultant surgeon in 1962 where he remained until his retirement in 1984.
