“Near this pillar lyeth interred ye body of John Perry Esqr who departed this life Octbr 29th A.D 1712 in the 51th year of his age. He was a native of this town and by an Early Application to business, acquired a very considerable fortune in ye island of Antegoa & other foreign plantations. By his Last Will, among several other charitable legacys, he bequeathed to ye poor of Youghal 300stg, ye interest whereof or ye produce by purchace is to be yearly distributed May ye 29th at ye church door of ye said Parish to such of ye sd poor as ye Ld Bsp of Cloyne shall then nominate & appoint. Be merciful after thy power, if thou hast much, give plenteously. If thou hast little, do thy diligence gladly to give of that little, for to gatherest thou thy selfe a good reward in the day of necessity.”
