Described in Dineley’s "Observations of a voyage" as “ Near the font at the West end of the middle isle of this church is read this inscription upon the tombstone of a dyer by trade.: Here lyes interr’d, his body turn’d to clay, He lived to dye, he dyed to live for aye. Thomas Smyth died May XXI MDCIXIX. He lov’d and liv’d, courteous to all & kinde, He joy'd much in a contented minde; He cared not for things here below, But still sayd My Redeemer lives I know".
