Today we remember L. Spellerberg, a German POW who died on this date in 1915 while imprisoned in Templemore Co. Tipperary.

Local historian C.J D'Estelle-Roe tells me Herr Spellerberg may have died from eating out-of-date German sausages. He was exhumed in 1950 and reburied in Glencree, Co. Wicklow. The funeral must have been something else - over 500 POWs in the Church of Ireland church singing during the service and at the graveside. A firing party was provided by the Leinster regiment.
