Blake, M.J. (Ed.) (1907-8), 93 and 96. FitzGerald (1910-12), 82 gives the date as 1731. Fleetwood Berry (1912 A), 8, gives the date as 1673. Hardiman (1820), 225 lists a Richard Mathews as a sheriff in 1751. This is possibly the same person in which case the date given by FitzGerald is too early. J

A double row of scalloped decoration occurs above the inscription which is in low false relief. The slab is in two pieces. A further Mathews (Robert) was also an alderman in 1679. See Blake (1907-8). See also No. 173 for Jane Mathews alias Stroaker, "wife of alderman Richard Mathews".
