Mungret is located three miles west of Limerick city on the Foynes road. The name appears to mean 'bog or sedgy morass of the sloping hill'. Mungret was one of the most important Early Christian monasteries in north Munster. Founded, apparently in the sixth century, by St Nessan.
There are three churches (Mungret Abbey, a possible pre-Norman church and a ruined Church of Ireland) and two graveyards in the Mungret Abbey ecclesiastical complex. The largest of the graveyards (LI013-009004-) surrounds Mungret Abbey Church (LI013-009005-) and the ruined Church of Ireland. The second graveyard (LI013-009003-) is located to the east and surrounds the smaller possible pre-Norman church (LI013-009002-.
