Judah Maccabee was a Jewish priest (kohen) and a son of the priest Mattathias. He led the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire 167–160 BC. He led an army against the Greek invaders who had taken over his country. Several of his men were killed in battle. It turned out that all of them had been wearing superstitious amulets or charms around their necks, a practice that was totally opposed to their Jewish faith. When Judas Maccabeus discovered this he took up a collection among all the people and sent two thousand drachmas to the Temple in Jerusalem to have sacrifices offered for those who had died. The Bible story draws a lesson from these events: “It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead that they may be loosed of their sins.”

James Condon 1881-1963, married Sarah Mary McCormack 1895-1923, daughter of James McCormack & Mary Hennessy of Annagh, Galbally, Co. Limerick on the 23rd Jan 1929 in St Josephs RC, Limerick City.
Patrick Condon 1883-1947, married Mary Dunlea, daughter of Thomas Dunlea & Bridget Minogue of Roran, Ballina, Co. Tipperary on the 30th Sep 1925 in St Josephs RC, Limerick City. Patrick was a publican in Hospital, Co. Limerick at the time of his death in 1947.
Philip Condon 1884-1958, married Lucy Archer 1895-1962, daughter of shopkeeper & farmer Thomas Archer & Bridget McEniry of Emly, Co. Tipperary in 1952 in Emly RC. Philip died of kidney failure in St Joseph’s Hospital, Clonmel on the 21st Feb 1958 & his widow Lucy died in St Vincents Hospital, Tipperary Town on the 25th Apr 1962. There is no memorial to them in Emly cemetery.
