Edmond Clancy 1846-1902, son of William Clancy 1813-1873 & Ellen Irwin - 1884 of Cush, Ballygrennan, Co. Limerick, married Margaret Collins 1854-1913, daughter of Nicholas Collins & Catherine Fitzgerald of Ballinvreena, Emlygrennan on Dec 26th 1972 in Glenbrohane RC, Co. Limerick.

Children born to them included Ellen Clancy 1874-1905, William 1877, Edmond 1870-1950, Catherine (Kate) 1883-1972, David 1886-1955, Anastasia (Statia) 1888-1928, Patrick (Paddy)1891-1920, Margaret (Peg) 1895-1957 & Mary 1902-1988.

Members of this Clancy family were very active on the Republican side in the War of Independence 1919-1921 and the Civil War 1922-1923. The Clancy sisters Kate, Statia,  Margaret & Mary were members of the Cush Company of Cumann na mBan.

Their brother Paddy was a member of the Cush Vounteers and also a member of the 4th Battalion of the Cork 2nd Brigade in Kanturk. He was shot and killed by Crown Forces at Derrygallon, Kanturk on Aug 16th 1920. His brother David was also a member of the Cush Volunteers and the East Limerick Flying Column.

The Clancy family’s farmhouse was a safe house and a meeting point and provided  food and refuge for republicans on the run. It was constantly raided by Crown Forces and was burnt to the ground by them in February 1921. In April 1921, David Clancy was awarded 900 pounds compensation for the damage to the family home. On Jan 30th 1930, he married his neighbour Margaret O’Donnell 1894 -1967 daughter of Bryan O’Donnell & Mary O’Toole. They had two sons, both bachelors, Edmond Clancy who died Jan 1991 & Patrick in Nov 2019 who is remembered at adjacent memorial 0019.

Ellen Clancy 1874-1905 died of tuberculosis. Her husband Benny Neenan predeceased her.

William Clancy 1877. Emigrated to the UK. Joined the British Army and became a commissioned officer.

Edmond Clancy 1880-1950. Emigrated to the UK. Married Elizabeth Hedworth Robinson 1887-1972 with whom he ran a successful business in Gateshead. They had four sons and four daughters.

Mary (Maura) Clancy 1902-1988. Married  John (Sean) Fogarty 1897-1973, son of Maurice Fogarty & Bridget Hayes of Ballingarry, Glenbrohane. They had no family. Both are remembered at memorial LI-BLGY-0228 in the local Ballingarry cemetery on the historicgraves website.
