Notes:
This small, square-topped limestone headstone was found in two pieces and is
unlikely to remain in its original position. The upper section measures approximately
11ins high × 9½ins wide × 3ins deep. The lower section measures 1ft 3ins high, with
the date 1758 occupying approximately 4ins. at its upper end. This lower portion
tapers towards the base, allowing the stone to be set securely into the ground when
originally erected.
The carved decoration and framed border are executed in relief and survive
principally on the upper section of the fractured stone. Fine, parallel grooved
striations are visible along the surrounding frame. No personal name is recorded; the
only inscription consists of the initials S K and the date 1758.
The carved motifs are loose in design leaving their identification uncertain. They
appear, however, more likely to represent occupational or trade symbols than
religious imagery. A square-like symbol appears beside the letter K, while at the top
centre is a motif resembling a hammer, flanked by two indistinct figures which may
represent animals. Other tool-like motifs include an axe-head-shaped implement and
what appears to be an anvil.
Taken together, these symbols may indicate the occupation of the person as a
possible blacksmith, carpenter or other metalworker, although the precise trade
cannot be identified with certainty from the surviving carvings alone.
