Pray for the soul
of James No
on Dd ye 10th of
Nov-ber 1754
The ligatures on this stone can't be reflected properly in the transcribed text. For example THE was enscribed with all three letters linking. Abbreviations were also used Dd for Died and ye for the. In the word November, the N was written backwards.
Whilst the text on the headstone is simply incised, a Christogram at the top is carved in relief, IHS intersected by a tau cross.
This small limestone square topped headstone is facing Westwards, a position usually reserved for clergy, although no clerical reference appears on the headstone text. The placing of this headstone is perhaps the outcome of ill-informed graveyard enhancement.
