Notes:

The Lombards buried here are  the Lombards of Lombardstown. The Lombards acquired 358 acres of land in Gortmolire from the O Callaghans of Dromineen Castle in about 1620 and acquired a further 1,500 acres l,mainly from the O Mullanes and O Callaghans after the Cromwellian confiscations. They were staunch Catholics but got a declaration of innocence after the 1641 rebellion and held onto their lands. They changed to C.of I. in 1717 probably for inheritance purposes during the penal laws era. They built Lombardstown house in c.1740 and James, the owner, became Sheriff of Cork in 1750 and then changed the name of his original 358 acre property from Gortmolire to Lombardstown in 1752. The Irish name, Gortmaoluidhre lived on until 2012 when Cork C.C.changed it to Baile Lombaird. There is a record of  James Lombard, who died in 1683 and who stipulated in his will that he should be buried in Kilshannig Cemetry .The Lombards leased their estate out to tenants in about 1830 following the death of Major James Lombard at the Battle of Oulart in 1798 .He died intestate and with no male heir his estated was inherited by his four daughters and the family leased out the lot in c.1830

The Princess Diana and Nano Nagle  Connections. It should be noted  that one of James Lombard's daughters   married  David James Nagle of Ballygriffin near Killavullen,in the late 1600's and their grand daughter Nano Nagle is on the way to sainthood  and  they also  gave their name to the Nagle Mountain Range.Their great grand daughter married Edmond Roche of Trabolgan whose son,Edmond, became 1st Baron Fermoy and this man's  great grand daughter Frances Roche married John Spencer and in 1961 Princess Diana was born. This throws up a most unlikely relationship between  Nano Nagle and Princess Diana and it also means that when either Prince William or Prince George becomes King of England they will be able to trace their maternal line directly back to Lombardstown.
