Denny John Wynn who rode the first Irish winner of the Aintree Grand National in 1847 is reputed to be buried in this Winn family grave. The horse's name was Matthew and he was trained by a Courtney from Ballymagooly near Mallow. Denis Winn died later from a racing accident and his son, Joseph took up the profession but his career also ended in tradegy. He ws chosen to ride in the Aintree Grand National some years later and on the morning of the race he got news that his sister in Dromore, near here, had died and he was urged to go home but he wanted to take the ride in honour of his father. As he approached the Chair there was an accident, Joseph was seriously injured and died a few days later, a tragic end to his racing career and a double tradegy for his family
