David Tobin 1897-1921 was born on the 19th Mar 1897 in Ballinalacken, Glenbrohane, Co. Limerick to parents John Tobin 1843-1901, a blacksmith & Ellen Cleary 1858-1940. His brother Edmond (Ned) Tobin 1894-1971 was a Quartermaster with the East Limerick Brigade and was interred at memorial 0331 in this cemetery.
Both David Tobin & Thomas (Tom) Murphy 1891-1921 were active volunteers during the War of Independence and were members of the Galtee Battalion Flying Column.
Thomas Murphy was born in Spittle, Ballylanders, Co. Limerick on the 4th Sep 1891 to parents John Murphy, a dairyman and Bridget Birmingham, originally from Ballylough, Co. Cork and who were married in Ballindangan RC, Co. Cork on the 21st Feb 1871.
On the 1st Jan 1921, David Tobin & Thomas Murphy attended Mass in St. Patrick’s RC in Glenbrohane. They were spotted by an informer who informed Crown Forces, After Mass, David & Thomas went to David’s mother’s house in Ballinalacken. Acting on information received from the informer, the Machine Gun Corps, led by Lieutenant Keller were dispatched from Kilmallock and surrounded the house. David & Thomas made their escape by the back door in the direction of the hill. David was killed in the first exchange of shots. Thomas escaped for about a quarter of a mile but he was outflanked by two soldiers and was shot in the groin. He died at Mick Quirke’s house early the next morning Jan 2nd.
Thomas (Tom) Howard was born in Ballingarry, Glenbrohane, Co. Limerick on the 22nd Jun 1894 to parents John Howard, a farmer & Jane Gaffney.
William Riordan was born in Cullane South, Ballylanders, Co. Limerick in Jul 1894 to parents James Riordan, a farmer & Bridget Hanlon.
Both were members of the East Limerick Flying Column who were killed in the Lackelly ambush by Captain Turton & his Green Howards regiment on May 2nd 1921. They were originally interred in Rathjordan cemetery in Herbertstown, Co. Limerick but were reinterred in this cemetery on the 8th Sep 1921.
Patrick (Paddy) Maher, born circa 1889 was wrongly convicted of involvement in the rescue of Sean Hogan at Knocklong train station on the 13th May 1919. He had no hand act or part in it. He worked at the station grading poultry & eggs. He was hanged along with Ned Foley, who did take part, in Mountjoy prison, Dublin on the 7th Jun 1921. He was buried within the prison grounds and was reinterred here on the 20th Oct 2001.
