IHS
ERECTED
by
Timothy Healy, Kilrush
A.D. 1861
For him & Posterity
The man who erected this grave is probably the Timothy Healy who joined the 8th Regiment Bengal Light Cavalry as Quartermaster Sergeant Major of the Regiment on 18 February 1844 and died in Sragh on 3 February 1892 aged 86.
The Clare Advertiser of 8 October 1870 reported the death "On the 6th inst. at High Street, Kilrush [of] the wife of Sergt. Healy".
That wife, the former Honora Burns, is very likely to be buried here.
Timothy soon remarried, on 11 February 1871 in Doonbeg parish, to the widowed Ellen Whelan née McMahon, who survived him and died on 25 February 1909.
Whether Timothy's second wife arranged for him to be buried with his first wife beneath this inscription is unknown.
