on Ash Wednesday 11th day of February 1891
He was a man of rare piety
A genuine friend, a sterling unselfish patriot
who served his country well and suffered for her
cause. As a small token of their deep affection
and an expression of their keen sorrow
for his premature death
This memorial cross
was erected by his many admirers
May the Sacred Heart of Jesus have mercy
on his soul Amen
