Thomas Mulvihill (1814-1887), who had this monument erected , was an Emly shopkeeper. He married Catherine O’Connell (1825-1883), daughter of Patrick & Mary O’Connell , in Emly RC on the 20-06-1845. There were fifteen children born , about eleven of whom survived infancy.
A son Thomas Mulvihill (1853-1898) became a priest and died in Dubuque , Iowa , U.S.A. A memorial was erected to him at Emly RC church grounds.
His older brother Patrick Mulvihill (1848-1926), married Ellen Ryan , daughter of Garryspillane , Co. Limerick shopkeeper , John Ryan in Knocklong RC on the 24-11-1867.
In the 1901 census for Raheenamadra , Knocklong , Co. Limerick , Patrick Mulvihill (1848-1926) is recorded as a 52 yr old shopkeeper & farmer and in 1911 as a widowed farmer and father of four surviving children out of a total of eight that were born.
The four surviving children in 1911, were John Mulvihill (1869- ), the eldest , and a 41 yr old bachelor living with his father Patrick in Raheenamadra. Ellen Mulvihill (1886 - ), the youngest, was single and living with her brother Cornelius Mulvihill (1876 - 1939 ) and his family in Mitchelstowndown.
Cornelius Mulvihill (1876 - 1939 ) married Mary Martin (1878 - 1925 ) , daughter of Ballylanders , Co. Limerick shopkeeper Cornelius Martin & his wife Bridget O’ Donnell. Children of Cornelius Mulvihill & Mary Martin included Ellen 1910 - 1923, William Patrick 1912 & Bridget Mary 1914.
The fourth surviving child of Patrick Mulvihill ( 1848-1927) & Ellen Ryan in 1911 was Thomas Edward Mulvihill (1870-1919), an Emly shopkeeper and publican , who married Mary O’Dwyer , daughter of Glenbrohane , Co. Limerick shopkeeper Matthew O’Dwyer in St. Saviours RC Limerick on the 31-01-1893.
Their son , Thomas Matthew Mulvihill was born in Emly in 1894 and became a priest and was made a Canon in 1960 while serving as PP of Newport , Co. Tipperary , where he introduced a school transport scheme. His mother Mary Mulvihill , nee O’Dwyer died young and his father Thomas Edward Mulvihill (1870-1919) remarried to a Mary Quane (1869-1952) about 1902.
Children of Thomas Edward Mulvihill (1870-1919) & Mary Quane (1869-1952) , who were all born in Emly were Michael Patrick Mulvihill (1903-1926), Catherine (Kitty) 1904-1994, Mary 1906 & Patrick J (Paddy ) 1910-1989.
Catherine (Kitty) Mulvihill 1904-1994, married Patrick Dalton (1904-1984), a native of Glenbrohane , Co. Limerick in Tipperary RC in 1940. Children born to them were Mary Dalton , Tommy, Patrick and Billy.
Parents of Patrick Dalton (1904 - 1984 ) were Thomas Dalton & Hanora Hennessy .
His wife , Kitty Dalton , nee Mulvihill 1904-1994 was interred in the new cemetery in Emly.
Patrick J ( Paddy ) Mulvihill 1910-1989, known locally as Paddy Mull did not marry. An Emly publican and grocer whose premises were where the present day Byrne’s Tavern and shop are located at Church St. Emly.
