The Emly premises , widely known as The Golden Thatch was known in earlier times as Higgins’ Hotel.
James Higgins (1855-1934), son of David Higgins & Maria Herbert of Kilmallock, Co. Limerick , married Johanna Donovan (1848 -1928), daughter of Thomas Donovan & Bridget Hayes of Emly , in Emly RC on the 14-02-1884.
Their daughter, Bridget Higgins (1886-1960) married James Aloysius Mulhall of Cullenagh , Ballyroan , Co. Laois in Emly RC on the 26-04-1917.
Their children , all born at Cullenagh, Ballyroan, Co. Laois , were Patrick J Mulhall 1919-2005, Aileen 1923, James Desmond (Des) 1924-2002 & Joseph 1925. Their father , James Aloysius Mulhall died in 1925 and his widow Bridget Mulhall , nee Higgins (1886-1960) and her family relocated to Emly.
James Desmond (Des) Mulhall (1924-2002) married Mary Josephine Heelan (1924-2001), daughter of Joseph Heelan & Elizabeth Condon of Ballinvrina , Emly in 1958. Children born to them were , Dermot Mulhall 1959-2013, Elizabeth, Breda & Miriam.
NB. Johanna (Josephine ) Higgins (1889-1928) and James Higgins (1892 -1961) whose names are recorded on this stone were siblings of Bridget Mulhall , nee Higgins (1886-1960) . .
Other siblings were Mary Higgins 1885 and Catherine Margaret (Kathleen) Higgins 1890, who married Thomas Alphonsus Twomey in Emly RC on the 14-9-1923. Their son, Vincent Twomey recorded here, died in infancy.
Thomas A Twomey was born in Lacken , Kilmihill, Co. Clare on the 13-01-1887. Parents were Jeremiah Twomey (1858 -1946) & Jane Hunt (1852-1924), both of whom were National School teachers.
