There  were  two  branches  of  the  Hurley  family  living  in  Gortatemple, Emly  in  the  censuses  of  1901  and  1911. The  people  recorded  on  this   stone  are   James   Hurley,   his  wife,  Nora Condon  and  their  children,   none  of  whom  ever  married.

The  other   Hurley   family  was  that  of  Maurice  Hurley  (1825 -   )  and  his  wife  Sarah  Ryan  (1834-1882),  daughter   of   Thomas   Ryan   of   Sologhead,   Co.  Tipperary.   Their  children  included   John  Hurley  1868,  Catherine  (Kate)  1871  &  Michael  1874.

 Catherine  (Kate)  Hurley is recorded in the 1911 census for Gortatemple.as a single mother with a two year old daughter called Mary Hurley. A Catherine Hurley died in St Patricks Hospital, Cashel, Co. Tipperary in April 1965. Age was recorde as 93 at the time of death.

NB.   Gortatemple,  a   townland  of  just  28  acres,  is  the  smallest  townland  in  Emly  parish.
