James O’ Brien, who had this memorial erected was born in Emly, Co. Tipperary to shopkeeper John O’Brien 1803-1876 & his wife Ellen Lacy / Lally 1814-1875 in Sep 1852.

John O’Brien 1803-1876 married Ellen Lacy / Lally on the 6th Mar 1835 in Emly RC.

Details of their children recorded here are Denis O’ Brien, born Dec 1854 who died of tuberculosis on Jan 3rd 1880. Occupation was recorded as a draper.

Michael O’Brien who probably died in infancy.

James O’Brien ( b. 1852 ) married  Ellen Kirby 1857 -1947, daughter of Maurice Kirby of Ballyhoodane, Caherelly, Co. Limerick in Inch St. Lawrence RC, Co. Limerick on the 22nd Nov 1881. Ellen died a widow on the 24th Feb 1947 in Emly. The death of her husband James O’Brien appears to not having been civilly registered in the Tipperary registrar’s  district.

 James O’Brien & Ellen Kirby had the following children who all practically emigrated to the USA.

1.John Joseph O’ Brien 1882-1955.  Arrival in New York on the 7th Mar 1908. Married Katherine Hennelly in New York on 19th Nov 1919. Their daughter Margaret E ( Peggy ) O’ Brien 1921-2012 married Joseph Francis Adams 1914-1994 in New York on the 23rd May 1942.

2. Maurice O’Brien 1883-1966. Married Catherine Gallagher on the 15th Nov 1909 in Weschester, New York. He died on the 29th Apr 1966 in Tarrytown, Weschester, NY.

3.Mary O’Brien Jul 1884.

4. Denis O’ Brien, born Jun 9th 1885. Arrival in NY on the 24th Apr 1903. Aged 46 and unmarried when he became a naturalised US citizen on Sep 22nd 1931 in Litchfield, CT.

5. Ellen ( Helena ) O’ Brien , born Sep 1886, Emigrated to the USA.

6. James Paul O’Brien 14th Jun 1888 – 9th Jul 1933. Ordained as Fr. Albert O’ Brien in Washington DC on Jun 23rd 1915. Appointed as chaplain of the Ohio State Penitentiary and was present at the fire there in Apr 1930. He was interred at St Joseph’s Priory in Somerset, Ohio.

7. Edmond  O’ Brien, born 7th Feb 1889. Emigrated to the USA.

8. Catherine O’Brien, born Jul 1890. Both she and her younger sister Elizabeth ( Eliza ) emigrated together to the USA and arrived there on the 3rd Jun 1911.

9. Elizabeth ( Eliza ) O’Brien, born Aug 1891.

NB. Walter  Barry, recorded  at this memorial as a nephew of James O’ Brien, was the son of Jame’s  older sister Catherine O’Brien  1840-1912,  who married  farmer  James Barry  1832-1909 of Gortacloona, Knockainy, Co. Limerick in Emly RC on the 5th Feb 1864. Their son Walter , born in Gortacloona on Jul 27th 1878, died due to whooping cough on the 1st Nov 1878.
