Ballyhone, Emly.
NB.John O’Meara (1855-1915), son of John O’Meara (abt 1808-1867) & Ellen McGrath (abt 1819-1876) of Ballinaveen, Emly, married Catherine O’Rourke (1858-1951), daughter of James O’Rourke (abt 1809-1903) & Ellen Kennedy (abt 1825-1911) of Ballinrea, Bruff, Co. Limerick in Bruff R.C on the 26-2-1895.
Children born to John O'Meara & Catherine O'Rourke at Ballyhone, Emly were Ellen Mary O'Meara 1895-1978, John (Jassie) 1896-1921, Mary (Molly) 1899-1973, James (Jimmy) 1900-1967 & William (Bill) 1901-1977
John (Jassie) O’Meara was born on the 03-12-1896,. He was an I.R.A. volunteer during the War of Independence. He was captured in September 1920 and imprisoned in Kilkenny for six months. On his release, he resumed duty as a Section Commander of Emly Company.
On the 21-6-1921, he was crossing a field on the railway road in Emly, opposite what was then Lonergan’s public house. He was spotted in a mirror in the pub by two Black and Tans, named Jamfreys & Williams and they ran out of the pub and shot him dead. Christy Fitzgerald, of Ballyvistea, who was with him at the time, knelt down to say a prayer, having also been wounded in the incident.
William (Bill) O’Meara was born on the 17-12-1901 and was ordained a priest in Genoa, Italy in 1927. He ministered in New Zealand and was a good friend to the Maori people. He died in Paeroa, NZ on the 17-11-1977 and was interred there.
James (Jimmy) O'Meara 1900-1967, was born on the 23-11-1900. He married Christina McEniry (1919-1979), a daughter of John McEniry (1877-1951) & Annie Fitzpatrick (1890-1969) of memorial number 0413 in Emly RC on the 15-04-1942.
Mary (Molly) O'Meara 1899-1973, was born on the 19-12-1899. She married Garda John Hartigan (1899-1974), son of Thomas Hartigan & Mary Ryan of Ballybricken, Co. Limerick in Emly RC on the 29-01-1930. Molly was living at Folly Villa , Wexford Town at the time of her death.
Her family included Thomas Hartigan 1931-2013 (Wexford), Maureen 1932-2004 (Wexford), Kathleen Valentine 1933-2020 (Wexford), John (Sean) 1934-2018 (Clontarf), Bill 1936-2002 (Wexford), Jim 1938- 2009 (Wexford), Eileen 1940- , Nora 1941 - & Ann 1944-2015 (Wexford).
Kathleen Valentine Murphy, nee Hartigan 1933-2020, died at Poulsac, Ballyboggan Lower, Castlebridge, Co. Wexford on the 27-08-2020. At the time of her death, she was predeceased by her husband Sean Murphy and survived by her son John Murphy, daughters Marie Annette & Breda and by her sisters Eileen & Nora.
NB. Christopher (Christy) Fitzgerald (1895-1969) who was with John (Jassie) O'Meara (1896-1921) at the time of his death, was born at Ballyvistea, Emly, Co. Tipperary on the 09-06-1895 to parents Denis Fitzgerald (1850-1916) & Elizabeth (Lizzie) Birrane.
Christy emigrated to the USA in Oct 1925 and married Norah Mullarkey (1909-1974), a native of Clonkeen, Co. Galway in New Jersey in 1935. They had two sons, Michael Joseph Fitzgerald, born Buffalo, Erie, New York 14-06-1935 and died in Weston, Broward, Florida 09-06-2018 and Christopher John Fitzgerald , born Buffalo also 15-12-1937 and died Toms River, Ocean, NJ 04-12-2017.
Christy Fitzgerald (1895-1969) died in Buffalo, Erie, NY on the 25-06-1969.
NB. On Sunday June 20th 2021, a centenary commemoration of John (Jassie) O' Meara's death took place at the monument to him in Coolboy, Emly . His grand-niece Rosemary Hartigan (of Wexford) gave a speech and John Hartigan (of Wexford) and Tadgh O'Meara (of Chantersland, Emly) planted a cherry blossom tree in remembrance of him. This event took place during Covid-19 restrictions.
