The Ryan family of Ballyvistea, Scarteen & Emly House. The famous Black & Tan foxhounds are housed at Scarteen, Knocklong, Co. Limerick, the home of the present day owner Chris Ryan.
NB. Gwendoline Ryan (1874-1919), nee Power, daughter of Sir James Power of Edermine, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford.
John joseph Ryan (1871-1954) was High Sheriff of Limerick in 1908. He was one of the finest horsemen in Irish hunt history. A Boer War and World War 1 veteran. He was mistakenly reported as having been killed in action during World War 1. His wife, Anita Purcell (1887-1975) was of Burton Park, Churchtown, Co. Cork.
Elizabeth Ryan (1861-1914), nee Bianconi, known as Lily, was a grand-daughter of Charles Bianconi (1786-1875) and a great grand-daughter of Daniel O’Connell, the Liberator (1775-1847). She was the daughter of Charles Thomas Bianconi (1832-1864) & Ellie O' Connell Fitzsimon 1838-1919 of Longfield House near Boherlahan, Co. Tipperary. Lily married Clement Joseph Ryan (1845-1922), son of John Ryan (1800-1863) & Alice McKnight Hartigan 1813-1891 of Scarteen House on the 30th May 1882 in Boherlahan RC, Co. Tipperary. Their children included John (Jack) Ryan 1884-1967, Helen 1885-1969, Clement 1888-1958, Alice 1890-1976, Mary Grace 1892-1929, Charles 1894-1918, Hugh 1896-1967, Amy 1898-1969, Christopher Anthony 1900-1969 & Elizabeth (Betty) 1902-1984
Mary Vincent Ryan (1854-1925), nee Parkes, eldest daughter of Sir Henry Parkes of Roslyn Hill.
Helen Ryan (1774-1844), nee Howley, daughter of John Howley of Rich Hill, Lisnagry, Co. Limerick.
John Ryan (1798-1863) was a director and guarantor of the Sadlier Bank in Tipperary Town that went bankrupt in 1856 due to embezzlement of funds by it’s founder John Sadlier. It was a financial disaster for the Ryan family and many others at the time.
John Ryan’s wife, Alice Ryan (1813-1891), the second daughter of John McKnight Hartigan had to assume control of the destiny of the Ryan family after her husband’s death in May 1863.
The Ryan family moved to Ballyvistea, Emly from Ballykeveen, Sologhead, Co. Tipperary circa 1691 and remained there until circa 1796. The famous Black & Tan foxhounds came to Ballyvistea, Emly about 1755 and moved to Scarteen, Co. Limerick circa 1798. They were in Emly House from 1887 to 1904.
Thaddeus Ryan (1642-1740) fought at the Battle of Aughrim and at the Siege of Limerick.
Eliza Ryan (1720-1800), nee O’Brien, of Abercross, Co. Cork.
NB.Thady Ryan ( 1923-2005), son of John Joseph Ryan (1871-1954) & Anita Purcell (1887-1975) of Scarteen, Co. Limerick and his New Zealand born wife Anne Peter (1925-2015) emigrated to Temuka, South Canterbury, NZ on the 03-04-1987. Both died in NZ. Thady was the seventh generation of his family to do so, when he became master of the Scarteen hunt in 1946. He handed over the reins to the present master, his son Chris Ryan in 1986.
Mary Grace Ryan (1892-1929) daughter of Clement Joseph Ryan (1845-1922) & Elizabeth (Lily) Bianconi (1861-1914) of Emly House married Nicholas Grene (1881-1942) son of James Grene & Alice Mary Kelly of Grenepark House, Dundrum, Co. Tipperary on the 12th Jan 1916 in Emly RC, Co. Tipperary. Their grandson, Patrick Farrell, son of Lily Farrell, nee Grene, inherited Emly House circa the mid 1980's. He died on the 19th May 2022 and was cremated following a private funeral. His obituary reads as follows :
Patrick Farrell of Emly, Co. Tipperary & formerly of Mayfield, Cashel, Co. Tipperary, passed away on 19th May 2022. He is survived by his wife Eileen, his children Aisling and Cormac, his daughter in law Aideen, his grand-daughter Líadan, his brothers John, Séamus, Niall and Francis, brother in law George, sisters in law Jane and Cathy, relatives and friends. Fondly remembering at this time his late sister Libby.
He will be greatly missed. Rest in peace
