NB. George Downes (1866-1945) was a skilled slater & plasterer born in Hospital, Co. Limerick on the 30 -07 -1866. He also had a grocer's shop in Hospital. He was the contractor who in 1927 undertook the restoration of the old RIC barracks in Pallasgrean, Co. Limerick which had been burned down in 1922 by republican forces during the Irish Civil War.
The correct date of death for his brother Daniel Downes was the 30 -09 -1938 in Hospital, Co. Limerick. Daniel's age at death was recorded as being 77 years old.
Their parents were Daniel & Susan Downes (nee) Harris.
Daniel Downes died in Hospital, Co. Limerick on the 01-11-1885. His age at death was recorded as being 69 years old
His widow, Susan Downes ( nee) Harris , died in Hospital , Co. Limerick on the 11 - 02 - 1895. Her age at death was recorded as being 64 years old.
George Downes (1866-1945) married Bridget Ryan, daughter of Thomas Ryan on the 01-04-1894 in Hospital RC, Co. Limerick.
Their children included Susan Downes b. 13-02-1895, Daniel Downes b. 08-10-1896 & Ellen Downes b. 11-07-1897, who died, aged 11 of tuberculosis on the 29-11-1909.
Following the death of his wife Bridget Ryan, George Downes remarried to Catherine ( Kate ) Mortell, daughter of Martin Mortell & Hanora Rourke of Ballyvoodane, Ardpatrick, Co. Limerick on the 29-04-1903 in St . Mary’s RC, Cork City.
Catherine Downes ( nee Mortell ), 2nd wife of George Downes, died on the 01-02-1945 in Hospital, Co. Limerick. Her age was recorded as being 74 years old at the time of her death.
Their daughter, Hanora Mary Downes, known as Mary , born 11-06-1904, married John Heelan of Ballycahill, Hospital on the 24-01-1939 in Hospital R.C. Children born to them included Michael Heelan 1940, Catherine 1941, Bridget 1944, Mary 1946 & Susan 1949.
