Mary Dowden was baptised on 25 January 1842, and lived in Bridge Street, Bandon. The Dowdens were one of the minor gentry families in Bandon, and connected with the Tresilian, Belcher and Freke families. Mary was the youngest of 9 children of Richard Dowden and Dora Belcher.

She lived locally in Killinardrish (Carrigadrohid), unmarried and was described as a "housekeeper". Mary died in 1914, and in her will left her nephew Alfred Richard Lester, a Cork chemist, as legatee.
