John  Scanlan, a widowed  shopkeeper of  Galbally, Co. Limerick, married Ellen Tobin (1853-1938), daughter of  Thomas TobinDeborah  Kelly of Kilfinane, Co. Limerick on the 20-02-1881 in Kilfinane RC.

Their son, Michael Scanlan (1892-1920), remembered at this memorial was born in Galbally on the 30-12-1892. He was a teacher at Kilmallock, Co. Limerick boys primary school. An active member of  the East Limerick Brigade, he was arrested by Crown forces and conveyed to Limerick. On the 27th Oct 1920, he made a dash for freedom, was pursued by his captors and mortally wounded on Thomas St, Limerick. A plaque was unveiled to him there in 1970.

His brother, Jimmy Scanlan (1891-1939)  was born on the 07-01-1891 and was an active member in the Galtee Battalion and was one of the Galbally five who took part in the rescue of Sean Hogan at Knocklong, Co. Limerick railway station on May 13th 1919. He died  unmarried  on the 3rd Oct 1939.

His brother , Dr. Garrett  Scanlan (1897-1968) was born on the 20-04-1897. He married in St Josephs RC, Limerick City on the 20th Jul 1932 to  Bridget Mary O'Callaghan. born in Turagh, Cappamore, Co. Limerick on the 4th Jan 1910 to parents Oliver O'Callaghan  & Catherine Lundon. The marriage was performed  by  Rev Peter Scanlan , brother of the groom, born 09-11-1895

Their brother, Patrick  Scanlan (1887-1970) was born 16-04-1887.

This memorial was erected by his daughter Elizabeth (Lizzie) Ryan, nee Scanlan  of  Monour , Kilross.

The Bridie Scanlan, recorded here, who died on Christmas Day 1925, was probably Bridget Scanlan, born on the 25th Feb 1884 in Galbally, daughter of John Scanlan & Ellen Tobin (1853-1958)

Another daughter, Deborah  Scanlan (1894-1969), a teacher, born in Galbally on the 23-02-1894 and died 14th Mar 1969, married creamery manager Timothy Ryan , son of farmer John Ryan in Thurles Cathedral, Co. Tipperary on the 18th Sept 1926.
