This Murphy family were farmers in Coolnacarriga for many years, one of the oldest families in the district. Older generations and other branches of the family were buried in another part of the graveyard, near grave No. 25.

Jeremiah died in his 20s. Dan Joe was married to Margaret (Stuake) Murphy who is buried in Macroom. Timothy was married to Joan Dalton, Newcastlewest. Margaret was married to Dan Corkery, Macroom. Michael, the first person commemorated in this grave, also had a brother Charles, who was married to Ann Duggan, lived in Shandangan West and is buried in Kilmurry graveyard. His sister Lizzie married John Wall and is also buried in Kilmurry.

Among those buried in the old graves were Dan Murphy, a brother of Jeremiah, (No. 3), who was married to Mary O'Connell, Lisladean. A sister, Johanne Forde, Fergus, Coachford, was also buried in the old Murphy graves.     This information came from Jerry and Angela Murphy,direct decendants, who live in the home farm and Teresa Murphy, Shandangan.

The Murphy family, Coolnasoon, were also buried in the old unmarked graves. Mike Murphy, born Nov. 1866, died on 24 May 1940 and his wife Mary (nee McSweeney, Coolnidane, Macroom) died on 30 October 1954 and are both buried in Canovee. Mike had single sisters who had a shop in Dunbar street in Cork city, Hannah (1873-1951), Ellie (1881-...) and are buried in Canovee. Mike's other siblings Mary, Eugene and Patie all emigrated to Boston and died in the US. 

Mike Murphy's parents were Jerry Murphy and Ellen McSwiney, Clodagh. We presume they were buried in Canovee, dates of death are for Jerry between 1901 and 1911, and Ellen 1890. Jerry Murphy (1835-190..) had a number of siblings, Eliza 1825, Michael 1830, Tadg 1833 and Margaret 1838. There parents were Michael Murphy and Johanna O'Mahony. Most of these may also have been buried in Canovee. This information came from Michael Murphy, living in the home farm in Coolnasoon, and his sister Rose.

Another branch of the old Coolnacarriga family were known as the Murphy 'Dundee' family and lived in Coolnasoon and Mahalough. With information from Rosarie Dilworth and her cousin Denis Delaney we know that their grandfather Jeremiah Murphy (born 5/3/1869) died on 14/7/1950 and was buried in one of the old Murphy graves, all in one line, in Canovee. Jeremiah's wife was buried in Macroom. Rosarie's sister Hanah Murphy, who died on 22/4/1962, was also buried there. Their father Jerry 'Dundee' Murphy was buried in Coachford. Their grandfather, Jeremiah's, parents were Jeremiah Murphy and Mary Brady and his siblings were brothers Cornelius (born 8/6/1860) and Michael (21/7/1871) and sister Bridget (1/3/1858). Bridget and her sons Michael (5) and Cornelius (3) Kearney lived with the Murphy family in Coolnasoon in the 1901 Census. Some of these may also be buried in this grave. Their house would be in the eastern side of the townland. The other Murphy Coolnasoon family lived in the western side.

Teresa Murphy Looney from Currahaly, Farran, says her brother Sean Murphy,(infant 9 months), buried in March 1931, in one of these graves. Also here were grandparents Daniel Murphy, Kilcrea, buried c. 1909 and Hannah Murphy, Kilcrea buried c. 1910-1912. Teresa's grand uncle, Con, a tradesman carpenter/stonemason, who built the old school in Farran1894, he died 19/6/1946 three weeks before his 90th birthday and was buried here.

Mary Murphy Downey, Caum, says her grandfather Michael, Railway View, Macroom, died 11-11-1933 aged 65, was buried in one of these graves. He had a brother Jerry, died 10-3-1934 aged 72, his son Dan was known as 'Happy'. She said that Joe Murphy, Upper New Street, the undertaker's, father Con, died 10-9-1937, was another brother and all three were buried in Canovee.
