  • Community Historian Brendan Matthews: “Musicians of Times Past”.

A very rare photograph depicting, on the left the late great Tom Matthews of Greenanstown, Fiddle Maker, Fiddle Player, Uilleann Piper and Harpist, while on the right is his great friend and neighbour at Greenanstown, the late great Anthony Carton, who also played both the Harp and the Fiddle. Both men are pictured here standing at the Jackstones at Greenanstown. They were taught how to make and play a variety of traditional Irish musical instruments by Tom`s father, also called Tom “The Crow” Matthews of Davidstown & Greenanstown. The younger Tom, also wrote a number of Irish Jigs & Reels, copies of which are held at the Irish Traditional Music Archives in Dublin . The Reels & Jigs were collected by the late Jack Wade, music collector from Monaghan, who passed away in 1967 following a car accident. The old black-thorn stick that can be seen here in the right hand of Tom Matthews is now in the care of Community Historian Brendan Matthews, Tom`s Great Grand Nephew. Anthony Carton passed away in 1951 and was laid to Rest at Kilsharvan Graveyard, while his friend and neighbour, Tom Matthews passed away just over four years later in 1955 and was laid to Rest at Ardcath Graveyard.
